"This is what a queer person looks like"

[Artist Statement] Tell us more about your photo by sharing a brief artist statement OR answering this prompt: "This is what being ______ means to me..." (Max. 100 words)

I was inspired to take this self portrait during a period of my life before I started fully questioning my gender. I came out as gay a year or so prior, which was a huge breath of fresh air - when I was freshly out and dating my girlfriend, I think I felt like "Ok, this is who I am now." That part of me is still true, but now I am beginning to understand myself in even deeper ways. This self-portrait represents the growing pains of coming into queerness, which I now understand to be a process that is never fully complete. I am always in the process of unknowing what I held to be true about myself and allowing myself to change in whatever ways I need. To me that is what queerness is all about - the understanding that we are all fluid, multi-faceted beings with the capacity to change and become who we want to be.

[Visual Description] Describe your photo so we can provide alt-text. Example: "Two women holding hands and smiling as they walk in a pride parade, surrounded by rainbow flags."

A portrait of a calm looking person sitting with one leg crossed over the other, in front of a vine-laced fence, with a dog sitting by their side.
